Dear Ms. Christie Tarantino, CAE
The American Board of General Dentistry would like to thank the Academy of General Dentistry for the AGD’s vital support of ABGD over the years. Visionary leaders in AGD saw the need for a certifying board for General Dentistry. The Academy of General Dentistry financially supported the organization of the Certifying Board of General Dentistry in 1984. The name later changed to American Board of General Dentistry. Nine diligent founding directors of the CBGD were chosen, all are General Dentists;
Dr. J Frank Collins
Dr. Ernest M. Edington
Dr. George Atkins
Dr. William Brokaw
Dr. Howard Bruggers
Dr. Dan Loving
Dr. Robert Mayhew
Dr. Clifford Miller
Dr. Anthony Tjan
AGD supported the founding director’s efforts and the efforts of subsequent boards. AGD has supplied qualified staffing and guidance to ABGD. AGD judiciously maintained oversight over the selection of ABGD directors, but never asserted its authority. AGD has always taken a position of confidence in ABGD to determine its own path. Now ABGD has repaid the financial debt to AGD, and AGD has relinquished the oversight of ABGD director selection. This is the ultimate expression of confidence in ABGD. ABGD of course feels the confidence is earned. AGD has given ABGD Roots and now has given ABGD Wings. It is now realized that the certification process is a major benefit to some general dentists. What was once a vision of our AGD leaders is now a fully matured functioning independent body fulfilling a need in General Dentistry. In founding and supporting a certifying body AGD has made an impact to the benefit of General Dentistry. The financial debt is repaid to AGD, but it is obvious ABGD will always be indebted to AGD for its inception and nurturing. This type of indebtedness can only be repaid with gratitude to AGD that will never fade.
Sincerely,
W.C.”Chuck” Janson, DMD, MAGD, ABGD
President
American Board of General Dentistry
