American Board of General Dentistry

“Job” Description

 

It is the responsibility of the Board of Directors of the American Board of General Dentistry to carry out all business of the ABGD, as specified in the Constitution and Bylaws of the ABGD.  To that end, individuals considered for service on the Board of Directors should become thoroughly familiar with the Constitution and Bylaws of the ABGD.  Candidates must understand and accept the following general description and responsibilities of the job.

 

1.      Meetings

 

There are currently two meetings held each year to conduct the business of the ABGD – one in April and one in July (associated with the AGD Annual Meeting).  Beginning 2005, the meeting schedule will change.  There will be a minimum of two meetings per year, and possibly three.  The known meetings will occur in May and November.  It is possible that a third meeting will continue to be held in July.

 

Time Commitment

 

Oral Examination and Business Meeting (May each year): 4-6 days

Written Examination construction and Business Meeting (November each year): 4-5 days

AGD Annual Meeting/Business Meeting (July/August each year): 2-3 days POTENTIAL

 

2.      Written Examination Preparation

 

The item bank for the Written Examination is reviewed, revised and updated each year.  Assignments are distributed by topic and the work is done “at home.”

 

Time Commitment

 

10-20 hours per year

 

3.      Oral Examination Preparation

 

The eight topics in the Discipline-specific portion of the Oral Examination are assigned on a rotating basis every two years.  Each Director is assigned a topic (excluding the President) and is responsible for developing an examination that is relevant and timely.  The specific examinations will be brought to the business meeting in November for review and archiving preceding the Oral Examination the following May.

4.      Other Business

 

There may be other business and functions of the Board that arise from time to time during the year.  These will include electronic correspondence and business meetings, phone calls and numerous other minor matters.
