This is my sixth year as an ABGD director. I feel fortunate to have witnessed these exciting years. I have witnessed substantial changes and masterful leadership. I got to witness the effort and leadership of Jim Curtis and Tom Hilton as they gained the confidence of the Federal Services Board and completed the merger of ABGD and FSBGD. I did not comprehend at the time how important this was. I do now. Now with the merger complete ABGD had to live up to the challenge. We had never examined as many as 40 candidates in one exam year. Chris Leclaire, my fellow Seminole, was on the hot seat to make this happen smoothly. He worked with Kris Abed-Canchola to come up with all the possible contingency plans. Because of their anticipation and planning the first Oral Exam after the merger was completed flawlessly.
ABGD was in debt to AGD for management expenses. Len Anglis made it his goal to rid ABGD of debt. He has to be one of the most generous people I have met. He personally contributed to relieve the debt. He asked to have contributions from board certified dentists and others to pay down the debt. Len achieved his goal and had the honor of handing the final debt payment to Bruce Burton, the board certified President of AGD. Now we have an operating reserve and a financial plan to prevent ABGD from returning to debt.
AGD has had oversight of the ABGD director selection process since the inception of CBGD. AGD has always respected the ABGD’s independence and never asserted influence over director selection. With the debt fully paid Kraig Vandewalle approached the AGD Trustees about the resolution to no longer have the requirement that ABGD directors be approved by the AGD Trustees and House of Delegates. He was successful in gaining their confidence. The House of Delegates agreed. ABGD is now an independent and a fully matured organization. ABGD is financially self supported. ABGD has functioned with integrity the whole time I have been involved. I feel that is a big key in the maturation and gaining of independence.
Something else which is very memorable to me is the week I met Dr. Buddy Boris. That was my first board meeting and turned out to be Buddy’s last. He was President Elect and had the full intention of serving his term. He shared very honestly his thoughts and feelings. He had cancer and had me convinced he would be fine. He immediately took me under his wing. He was one of those warm people with whom you instantly feel a bond. I truly feel like I must have known him more than a few days. It is hard to believe that he made such a vivid impression in such a short time. He was a tireless servant of ABGD and we created the Dr. Buddy Boris Memorial Award for Distinguished Service to honor a deserving person each year who has served ABGD.
Completion of the merger, successful merged oral exams, retirement of the debt and the AGD giving ABGD wings are all events that are memorable to me. I have met some of the most honorable directors and become friends with them. What a ride.
My time serving ABGD has been a pleasure and a privilege. I encourage other board certified general dentists to consider serving ABGD as a director. Just go to the website and download the ABGD Director application. I think you will find service to ABGD to be equally rewarding even though the pay is nil.
We appreciate the efforts of our webmaster, David Stanczyk, for volunteering to create and maintain our website!
Thank you,
W.C.”Chuck” Janson, DMD, MAGD, ABGD
President, American Board of General Dentistry

Nomination Process
Interesting in becoming a Director with the American Board of General Dentistry? The ABGD is currently accepting applications for consideration as a potential Director. Directors are elected to serve a three-year term with the opportunity to be elected to a second term. The job of an ABGD Director requires true commitment. It involves attending a minimum of two business meetings a year and serving as an examiner during the Oral Examinations. A Director will spend at least 10, and possibly 14 or more, days away from their primary professional endeavor to attend official ABGD functions. In addition, there are responsibilities that must be met in a timely manner throughout the year. This “at home” time commitment varies between 25-50 hours per year. Officers on the Board will devote anywhere from a couple of additional hours per month to several hours per week in service to the Board.
Directors must be Board Certified general dentists in good standing with the ABGD. All interested parties must complete an application that is available from the Executive Secretary Kris Abed-Canchola or the website. A personal statement of interest in and commitment to the position is also required, along with a curriculum vitae. Achievements in the profession, such as Mastership in the AGD, will be duly considered. Major emphasis will be placed on service to the profession and the ABGD. Individuals who are being considered as potential Directors will be called upon to assist the Board of Directors in varying capacities such as staffing the ABGD information booth at the AGD Annual Meeting, writing examination questions and developing cases and/or serving as deputy examiners for the Oral Examination.
Applications will be accepted throughout the year and will initially be reviewed by the Nominating Committee. The goal of the nominating process is to identify individuals who will offer the highest level of service to the ABGD Board of Directors. It is through the earnest efforts of the Directors that the mission of the ABGD is achieved. Diversity among the Directors in terms of representation from the Federal Services, academia and civilian private practice is desirable. Those individuals approved by the Nominating Committee will be submitted to the ABGD Board of Directors.
If you are interested of serving on the ABGD Board of Directors, please contact any of the current Directors for more information and Kris Abed-Canchola for an application.
To be posted in November 2007.
