ABGD 2008
Newsletter
Letter from the
President
W. C. “Chuck”
Janson, DMD, MAGD, ABGD
ABGD is Going
Green
This will be the last hard copy issue of the ABGD Newsletter. I personally have enjoyed receiving my copy in the mail, but many reasons make it more practical to deliver our good news and information in another format. ABGD will now be using our Web site to keep ABGD dentists up-to-date in addition to keeping the ABGD candidates informed as they challenge the board. I am sure it is obvious to all that the overall costs would be significantly reduced by using the Web site, and an annual printed newsletter could never keep up with the timeliness of the Web site. Please go to www.abgd.org, and put it in your favorites list.
This is my sixth year as an ABGD Director and I feel fortunate to have been apart of these exciting years. I have witnessed substantial changes and masterful leadership. I have witnessed the effort and leadership of past President Jim Curtis and Tom Hilton as they gained the confidence of the Federal Services Board and completed the merger of ABGD and FSBGD. I did not comprehend at the time how important this was; I do now. With the merger complete, the ABGD had to live up to the challenges and expectations of a unified board. For example, we had never examined as many as 40 Oral Exam candidates in one year. President Chris Leclaire, my fellow Seminole, was on the hot seat to make this happen smoothly. He worked with Kris Abed-Canchola, ABGD staff, to come up with all possible contingency plans to make sure the Oral Exams came off without a hitch. Because of their anticipation and planning, the first Oral Exam after the merger was completed flawlessly.
Another issue that was constant during my time on the Board came from the ABGD being in debt to AGD for start up and management expenses. Past President Len Anglis made it his goal to rid the ABGD of debt. He has to be one of the most generous people I have met, contributing annually to relieve the debt. He started a campaign to request contributions from Board Certified dentists and others to help pay down the debt. Len achieved his goal and had the honor of handing the final debt payment to Dr. Bruce Burton, the Board Certified President of AGD. Now we have an operating reserve and a financial plan to prevent the ABGD from lapsing back into debt.
As part of the original loan agreement, the AGD has overseen this organization’s governance, such as the director selection process, since the inception of CBGD. AGD has always respected the ABGD’s independence and never asserted influence over our governance or director selection. However, with the debt fully paid, past President Kraig Vandewalle approached the AGD Trustees requesting to absolve the AGD presence in all future ABGD governance. Kraig was successful in gaining their confidence and the House of Delegates agreed to our request. ABGD is now an independent and a fully matured organization that is financially self-supportive. ABGD has functioned with integrity the whole time I have been involved with the organization. I feel that is the key to achieving this independence.
Another very memorable moment for me was the week I met Dr. Buddy Boris. It was my first board meeting and it turned out to be Buddy’s last. He was President Elect and had the full intention of serving his term. He shared his thoughts and feelings very honestly with the board. He had cancer; however he had me convinced he would be fine. He immediately took me under his wing. He was one of those warm people with whom you instantly feel a bond. I truly felt like I must have known him more than a few days. It was hard to believe that he made such a vivid impression on me in such a short time. He was a tireless servant of ABGD and with his passing we created the Dr. Frank “Buddy” Boris Memorial Award for Distinguished Service to honor a deserving person each year who has served ABGD.
With the completion of the merger, successfully merged written and oral exams, retirement of the debt and the AGD giving the ABGD wings are all events that will continue to be memorable for me. I have met some of the most honorable Directors and became friends with them. What a ride it has been!
My time serving the ABGD has been a pleasure and a privilege. I encourage other Board Certified general dentists to consider serving ABGD as a Director. Just go to the website and download the ABGD Director application. I think you will find service to ABGD to be rewarding even though the pay is nil.
Lastly, the Board would like to express their everlasting appreciation to our webmaster, Dr. David Stanczyk, for volunteering to create and maintain our Web site!
Thank you,

W. C. “Chuck” Janson, DMD, MAGD, ABGD
President, American Board of General Dentistry

Rosalie A. Small (Rosie)
Executive Director
ABGD Directors
ABGD Directors serve three (3) year terms, with a maximum of two (2) terms. The Director’s terms are staggered to provide stability and continuity to the Board. As Director positions become available, candidate applications submitted to the ABGD are reviewed with qualified candidates being elected by the Board. Previous service to the Board is a significant factor in the Board’s decision in the election of new directors. Service to the Board also provides interested candidates with access to Board Directors and Board functions. It is the intent of the Board to provide opportunities for interested Board Certified general dentists to assist in Board activities and to become a Director candidate.
Service to the
American Board
There are several areas of service activities available to those who are interested in serving the Board.
1) Volunteers for the ABGD Information Booth at the AGD Annual Meeting provide information to prospective Board candidates.
2) Deputy examiners serve to assist the ABGD Directors during the Oral Exam. The deputy examiners are selected from a pool of interested Board Certified dentists.
For all service activities, the Board will attempt to rotate individuals to provide a broad experience in Board activities, and to provide the maximum number of Board Certified members the opportunity to assist in Board activities.

First Notice of
Registration Fees
The first notice of the Annual Registration fees will be sent out in September with a second notice to follow. Though it is not a bill, the second notice will be a reminder, and is done as a courtesy to the (Conditionally) Board Eligible and Board Certified dentists. If you rely on this reminder to pay the annual registration, please be sure to have your correct contact information on file with ABGD. The ABGD has put much effort into locating Board Eligible and Board Certified dentists. The ABGD asks your assistance in keeping your contact information up-to-date in the ABGD files. Some ABGD dentists think all they have to do is update their changed contact information with ADA and/or AGD. That will not help ABGD. You must contact ABGD with your new contact information.
The ABGD Board
Certified Annual Registration fee is $95 and can be paid prior to December 31,
2008 or $120 from January 1, 2009 through April 30, 2009.
The ABGD Board
Eligible and Conditionally Board Eligible Annual Registration fee is $40 and can
be paid prior to December 31, 2008 or $65 from January 1, 2009 through April 30,
2009.
Failure to pay the Annual Registration fee and/or to recertify within the five (5) year cycle (for Board Certified members) will result in a loss of one’s status. ABGD hopes to avoid this as it values all of its members. Please do your part to remain in good standing.

AGD supported the founding director’s efforts and the efforts of subsequent boards. AGD has supplied qualified staffing and guidance to ABGD. AGD judiciously maintained oversight over the selection of ABGD directors, but never asserted its authority. AGD has always taken a position of confidence in ABGD to determine its own path. Now ABGD has repaid the financial debt to AGD, and AGD has relinquished the oversight of ABGD director selection. This is the ultimate expression of confidence in ABGD. ABGD of course feels the confidence is earned. AGD has given ABGD roots and now has given ABGD wings. It is now realized that the certification process is a major benefit to some general dentists. What was once a vision of our AGD leaders is now a fully matured functioning independent body fulfilling a need in General Dentistry. In founding and supporting a certifying body AGD has made an impact to the benefit of General Dentistry. The financial debt is repaid to AGD, but it is obvious ABGD will always be indebted to AGD for its inception and nurturing. This type of indebtedness can only be repaid with gratitude to AGD that will never fade.
Sincerely,
W.C.”Chuck” Janson, DMD, MAGD, ABGD
President, American Board of General Dentistry

Examples of incomplete EP requirements include no copy of certificate of completion on file for Entry Point I, less than the 600 CE hours submitted for Entry Point II, or no copy of Mastership plaque on file for Entry Point III. Candidates who have a conditional Board Eligible status must complete all entry point requirements before a candidate will be allowed to apply for or sit for the Oral Examination. A
five-day Oral Exam review course is being offered at Lackland Air Force Base on

challenge the final portion of their board, the oral and treatment planning
examination. The course offers a fast-paced, comprehensive review of all dental
specialties, as well as a review of each specialty’s integration into
comprehensive general dentistry. The treatment planning portion of the course
offers candidates the opportunity to develop a treatment plan for a complex case
under ABGD exam conditions. Attendance is open to Federal Service Dentists, and
non-military dentists pending space availability (course fee - to be announced).
Preference is given to ABGD candidates who have passed the written examination
and are registered to take the oral exam in the current year.
